The five-card Niu Niu game: how the three-plus-two split scores, and why the multiplier ladder applies to what you lose as well.

Bull Bull, also called Niu Niu, is a five-card Chinese game streamed by live studios across Asia. Each hand of five cards is split into three cards that must total a multiple of ten — picture cards count as ten — and the remaining two, whose last digit is the score. A hand with no valid three-card combination has no bull and scores nothing. When the last two also total a multiple of ten the hand is Bull Bull, the top score. The pricing sits in a multiplier ladder rather than the score alone. High scores and Bull Bull pay two, three or more times the stake, and special hands such as five picture cards usually pay more again. The ladder is what makes the game look generous. What is easy to miss is that on most tables the multiplier applies to the banker's hand as well. Losing to a banker holding Bull Bull costs the same multiple that winning with it would have paid, so a table stake of 100 can settle at 300 in either direction. The exposure is the ladder, not the stake shown on the felt. Score rules, the multiplier ladder and whether the banker's multiplier applies to losses are all set out on the table's rules screen, and they differ between studios.
