A European handicap, also called a three-way handicap, applies a whole-goal head start or deficit to one team while keeping three possible outcomes: home win, draw or away win, each judged after the handicap is applied. Unlike an Asian handicap there is no stake refund, because the handicap draw is a separate result that loses your bet if you backed either side.
Worked example: you back the away team at -1. If they win 2-0, the adjusted score is 1-0 and the bet wins. If they win 1-0, the adjusted score is 1-1, the handicap draw wins, and your bet loses rather than being returned.
Only whole numbers are used, so no half-goal lines appear. Prices are usually longer than the Asian equivalent precisely because the push protection is removed and a third outcome exists.
