The maximum bet rule is a bonus restriction that caps how much can be staked on any single wager while bonus funds are active. A representative term reads: maximum bet of 5 per spin while a bonus is in play. The rule exists to stop players from clearing a wagering requirement with one or two very large bets, which would let them convert bonus credit to withdrawable cash with minimal risk and turnover.
Worked example: you hold a bonus with a 35x wagering requirement and the terms set a 5 maximum bet. If, in the middle of the playthrough, you place a single 20 spin — perhaps by adjusting the stake without thinking — you have breached the rule. The penalty is typically severe and disproportionate to the slip: many operators void the entire remaining bonus and, critically, any winnings derived from it, even though only one bet exceeded the limit. The breach does not need to be deliberate to be enforced.
Why it matters: the maximum bet rule is one of the most common reasons winnings are confiscated, and it catches honest players who simply did not read the terms. The practical safeguard is to set your stake at or below the cap at the start of a bonus and leave it there until the wagering is complete. A frequent misunderstanding is assuming the rule applies only to slots; it often covers all qualifying games, and some terms also restrict the maximum stake as a percentage of the bonus. Always confirm the exact figure before playing. See also wagering requirements, bonus terms and match deposit bonus.
