MGA

The Malta Gaming Authority, or MGA, is the statutory body that licenses and regulates online gambling operators based in Malta. An MGA licence is among the most respected and widely recognised credentials in the industry, accepted across much of Europe and in many markets beyond it. Malta's membership of the European Union lends the licence additional standing within the European single market. In practice, holding an MGA licence obliges an operator to meet extensive standards: segregation of player funds from operating capital, mandatory responsible-gambling tools such as deposit limits and self-exclusion, robust anti-money-laundering and KYC procedures, certified game fairness, and access to an independent dispute-resolution process for player complaints. For example, a player who cannot resolve a withdrawal dispute directly with an MGA-licensed casino can escalate the matter to the authority or an approved alternative dispute-resolution body, a recourse that unlicensed sites do not offer. Why it matters: licensing is the clearest signal of an operator's legitimacy, and the presence of a verifiable MGA licence number — which can be checked on the authority's public register — is a meaningful mark of trust. The common mistake is to assume any displayed logo is genuine; players should confirm the licence on the regulator's own website rather than trusting an image on the casino's page.
