Player fund segregation is the licence requirement that customer balances are held in bank or trust accounts kept separate from an operator's own working capital. The point is insolvency: if the business fails, segregated money is easier to identify as belonging to players rather than being swept into the general pool available to creditors. Regulators commonly grade the level of protection — from basic separation with no legal ring-fence, through trust arrangements, to insurance or guarantees — and many require the operator to disclose which level applies in its terms. Segregation is not a guarantee of repayment; recovery still depends on local insolvency law and on how the accounts were actually maintained. Checking the stated protection level is a reasonable step before leaving a large balance sitting in an account.
