Pot Odds

Poker

Pot odds compare the size of the pot to the cost of a call. They indicate whether a call is mathematically justified based on your hand's winning probability.

What does Pot Odds mean in poker?

Pot odds express the relationship between the size of the current Pot and the price of a Call, and they tell you the minimum equity your hand needs for that call to be profitable. They are the foundation of every calling decision in poker, turning a vague feeling about a draw into a concrete mathematical test. The calculation is simple. If the pot holds 100 and an opponent bets so that you must call 25, you are being offered 4 to 1: you risk 25 to win the 125 that would be in the pot. Converting that ratio to a percentage, your break-even equity is 25 divided by (100 + 25 + 25), which is 25/150, or roughly 16.7% in the common formulation where you compare your call to the eventual pot. If your hand wins more often than that threshold, calling shows a long-run profit. Tie pot odds to your Out count and the picture sharpens. A flush draw has about 18% equity with one card to come, comfortably above a 16.7% requirement, so calling the example bet is correct. The same draw facing a pot-sized bet, where you must call 100 to win 300, needs 25% equity and now barely breaks even, illustrating how the price, not just the hand, decides the call. Two mistakes recur. The first is ignoring implied odds: when a draw will win extra bets on later streets if it hits, a call can be justified even when the immediate pot odds fall slightly short. The second is the reverse, overpaying on the river where no future bets can rescue a missed draw. Match the maths to the street, and let pot odds, not optimism, drive the decision.
