Segregated player funds means customer balances are held in a separate bank or trust account from the operator's own working capital, so the money is not used to pay staff, marketing or suppliers. Many licensing regimes require segregation and ask operators to publish how well player money would be protected if the business failed, using categories that range from no protection to funds held under an independent trust. Segregation is a bookkeeping and custody rule, not a deposit insurance scheme: it improves the chance that balances can be returned during an insolvency, but it does not guarantee repayment. Players can check the terms or the licence page for the stated protection level, and avoid leaving a large balance parked in an account they are not actively using.
