Sharp

A sharp, or sharp bettor, is a professional who bets with a genuine edge, consistently placing wagers that carry positive expected value. Sharps are the bettors bookmakers respect most, because their action signals information. When a known sharp backs one side, books often move the line to account for what that bettor is presumed to know, which is why sharp money can shift prices that public money cannot. Sharps are defined by method rather than by stake size, though they typically bet larger. They focus on market inefficiencies, build or rely on mathematical models to estimate true probabilities, and shop across books for the best available price. A central discipline is tracking closing line value, the comparison between the odds they took and the Closing Line just before the event begins. Consistently beating the closing line is the clearest statistical evidence that a bettor holds a real edge rather than simply enjoying good variance. A short example shows the idea. If a sharp regularly bets a team at 2.10 and the price closes at 1.90, they have repeatedly secured better odds than the market's final, most-informed assessment; over a large sample that gap converts into long-run profit even when individual bets lose. The closing line, having absorbed all late information, is treated as the most accurate available estimate of true probability. Sharps are the opposite of square, or recreational, bettors, who tend to follow public sentiment, favourites and popular teams. The common misconception is that being sharp means winning most bets; in reality a sharp may win only slightly more than half while remaining highly profitable, because the edge lies in price, not in a high strike rate. Chasing a high win percentage instead of value is precisely the error that separates squares from sharps.
