Surrender

Surrender is a blackjack option, offered in some variants, that lets a player fold a hand before taking any further action in exchange for forfeiting half the stake. Rather than playing out a hopeless hand and risking the whole bet, you concede 50% and keep the other 50%. There are two forms. Early surrender, allowed before the dealer checks for blackjack, is distinctly player-favourable and consequently rare. Late surrender, the common version, is only available after the dealer has confirmed they do not hold blackjack. Used correctly on genuinely unfavourable hands, surrender is mathematically optimal and trims the house edge by roughly 0.07–0.08%. The textbook spots under late-surrender rules are hard 16 (excluding a pair of 8s) against a dealer's 9, 10 or ace, and hard 15 against a dealer 10. Worked example: you hold a hard 16 against a dealer 10. Playing it out, you win only about 23% of the time, so on a £100 bet your expected result is a loss of roughly £54. Surrendering instead locks in a guaranteed £50 loss. Sacrificing £50 to avoid an expected £54 loss is the better play — over many such hands the saving compounds. The common mistake is the opposite extreme: surrendering too readily out of fear, on hands that are merely weak rather than truly lost, which throws away half a stake you should have contested. Surrender only the specific hands the strategy chart flags. Confirm the table actually offers it and whether it is early or late before relying on it. Compare with basic strategy, bust and insurance.
