UPI

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's real-time payment system, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It links all major Indian banks and enables instant, free or near-free transfers directly from a bank account using a mobile phone, identified by a simple UPI ID or QR code rather than full account numbers. With well over 300 million users, UPI is the dominant deposit and withdrawal method for online gambling in India, and operators targeting the Indian market generally must support it to compete. Popular front-end apps include Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM. Worked example: an Indian player funding a gambling account selects UPI at the cashier, is shown a QR code or a collect request, approves it in PhonePe with a PIN, and the deposit reflects within seconds — no card details entered, no fee in most cases. Withdrawals back to the same UPI ID are similarly fast where the operator supports payouts to UPI. Why it matters for affiliates and operators: payment friction is a leading cause of abandoned sign-ups in India, so UPI availability materially affects conversion and retention from Indian traffic. The important caveat is regulatory. The legality of real-money online gambling varies by Indian state, and banks or UPI apps periodically block transactions to operators they identify as gambling-related, so a deposit method that works one week may be declined the next. Players should understand the legal position in their own state, and operators should not assume UPI access is permanent. Compare with wire transfers and ACH as alternative banking rails in other markets, and treat responsible-gambling and age checks as mandatory.
