Settlement is the step where an operator grades a bet as won, lost, void or partly returned, and credits the account accordingly. Until it happens, a stake is committed but the outcome is not recorded against the balance.
Settlement follows the operator's published rules rather than the scoreboard alone. Those rules decide which official source is authoritative, what happens if a fixture is abandoned or postponed, how a dead heat is divided, and whether a market that has become impossible is voided or lost. Two operators can therefore settle the same event differently and both be acting within their terms.
Delays are common and usually procedural: the operator waits for an official result, or a market is held while a review takes place. If a settlement looks wrong, the reference to quote is the bet ID from the bet history together with the market and the time placed. A resettlement — a correction after the fact — is permitted under most rule sets when the original grading was made on incorrect information.
