A professional gambler earns their main income from betting or gaming. What the role really involves, why it is rare and the risks that come with it.

A professional gambler is a person whose main income comes from betting or gaming rather than from employment, typically poker players, sports bettors or advantage players. The role is far less common than media coverage suggests. It depends on a large bankroll, meticulous record keeping, strict staking limits and the acceptance that results are judged over years rather than weeks, because ordinary variance can produce long losing stretches with no warning. The practical picture is unglamorous. Income is unstable, accounts can be limited or closed without notice, and the tax treatment of gambling winnings differs sharply between countries. The overwhelming majority of people who bet regularly lose money over time, and the professional label can disguise problem gambling. Treating gambling as a career is not a realistic financial plan; if losses are being chased, support services and self-exclusion tools exist.
