Props let bettors engage with the detail of an event rather than only its outcome. Props divide broadly into player props and game props. A player prop centres on an individual's performance, such as a striker to score anytime or a player's total points to finish over a set line; a game prop concerns a match-wide event, such as whether there will be a score in a given period. Player props in particular have multiplied since the spread of legal sports betting and the availability of granular real-time data, which lets books price ever more specific markets. Major occasions showcase the breadth. Around a marquee event such as the Super Bowl, sportsbooks may post hundreds of props spanning both teams and individual players, some serious and some novelty. The variety is part of the appeal, but it also means many props sit in lower-liquidity, higher-margin markets where the bookmaker's edge is wider than on headline lines. The common mistake is treating props as soft simply because they feel like fun side bets. Some player props can be exploitable when you hold a genuine informational edge, but many carry a heavier built-in margin and tempt bettors into stacking several correlated selections.
