A split symbol is a slot symbol that counts as two or more instances of itself in a single grid position, so one landing can fill what would otherwise take several separate hits. Split symbols are common in Megaways-style games, where the number of ways to win is recalculated per spin and a split effectively doubles the symbol count on that reel. They apply to standard paying symbols and, in some titles, to wilds and scatters as well. The distinction from a stacked symbol matters: stacked symbols occupy several separate positions on a reel, while a split occupies one position that is read as multiple symbols. Split symbols increase the size of the biggest possible combinations rather than how often wins occur, which typically pushes a game toward higher volatility.
