Expanding Reels

Expanding reels is a slot mechanic in which the playing grid grows during a round, adding extra rows to existing reels or extra reels to the layout, which increases the number of paylines or ways to win while the expansion lasts. The growth is usually tied to a trigger: entering free spins, landing a set number of scatters, filling a meter, or hitting consecutive wins. Some games expand permanently for the rest of the feature, others one step at a time and reset afterwards. A larger grid raises the number of possible combinations, but the maths model is balanced around it, so the expansion is not free value added on top of the game's return. Expanding reels typically shift returns toward the feature and away from the base game, which raises volatility and lengthens gaps between meaningful wins.
