Map Handicap

A map handicap is an esports handicap bet that starts one team with a virtual map lead or deficit in a series, so the wager settles on the adjusted map score rather than the raw result. In a best-of-three, backing a favourite at -1.5 maps means they must win 2-0 for the bet to win, while the underdog at +1.5 maps covers if they take at least one map, winning 2-1 or losing 0-2. Handicaps in whole numbers (for example -1) can be voided or pushed on certain scorelines, whereas half-map lines like -1.5 always produce a clear win or loss. The purpose of the line is to shorten a lopsided series and lengthen the odds on a heavy favourite, giving a more balanced price than the straight series winner market. Worked example: a top CS2 team is priced at 1.30 to win a best-of-three outright, too short to interest many bettors. The book offers that same team at -1.5 maps at odds of 2.10. A £50 stake at 2.10 returns £105 (£55 profit) if the favourite sweeps 2-0, but loses if they win 2-1 or slip up entirely. Taking the underdog at +1.5 maps at 1.72 pays £86 on a £50 stake whenever they grab a single map.
