Social Casino

Casino

Casino-style games played with coins that cannot be cashed out. Why the win rate tells you nothing about the real-money version.

A social casino is an app or site offering casino-style games — slots, roulette, poker, bingo — played entirely with virtual coins that cannot be cashed out. Coins are given on sign-up, replenished on a timer, handed out for daily logins or bought with real money, but they only ever buy more play. Because nothing is redeemable, social casinos are generally treated as games rather than gambling, and they appear in ordinary app stores where real-money casinos cannot. That also means the licensing, fund-protection and responsible-gambling requirements placed on a licensed operator do not apply, though the major stores impose their own age ratings and purchase controls, and a device's spending limits work here as anywhere else. Two things are worth understanding about the mechanics. The coin economy is tuned for engagement, not for return, so the win rate a player sees in a social version tells you nothing about the paytable or return of a real-money game with the same name. And progress systems — daily bonuses, streaks, levels, timed offers — are designed to bring players back on a schedule. Where an app carries advertising for a real-money site, that is a marketing relationship rather than a shared game or shared odds.
